CornellRisk Consulting

Founding semester · Spring 2027

Consulting careers most students don't know exist.

Every major consulting firm runs a risk practice. Its teams investigate fraud, test the models banks rely on, value the damages in lawsuits and advise clients on what to do next. We're a new student club that helps you find these roles, learn the work and prepare for the interviews.

What we cover

Four kinds of risk work

Our workshops, speakers and interview prep rotate through these four areas.

Forensics & Financial Crime

When a company's numbers don't add up, forensic teams find out why. Trace fraud and money laundering through millions of transactions, find the controls that failed, and build the evidence, in cases as large as Wirecard's €1.9 billion in cash that never existed.

Risk Modeling

A spreadsheet error in a JPMorgan risk model understated the risk behind a $6 billion trading loss. Build and test the models banks use to lend and trade, along with the checks meant to catch errors like that one.

Fits CS, ORIE, Statistics, Economics

Litigation Economics

When one company sues another, economists put a dollar figure on the damage. Build the models behind that number from large datasets of sales and prices, in cases as large as Oracle's $8.8 billion claim against Google.

Fits Economics, AEM, CS

Strategy & Analytics

Help a client decide what to do about a risk: whether to enter a market, how to rebuild after a fraud, which processes and controls to redesign. Then back the recommendation with the analysis.

Why it's worth a look

A different way into consulting

Every major firm has a risk practice

Risk work sits inside each of the Big 4 and is central to firms like Kroll, FTI and Ankura. The skills you build carry from one firm to the next.

Your major already fits

Analysts come from Computer Science, Economics, AEM, Government and Engineering. What matters is working carefully with data and explaining what you found.

A less crowded path

Most consulting-minded students only apply to strategy roles. Risk practices recruit on their own tracks, and many strong candidates never hear about them.

Firms with risk practices include

Deloitte · PwC · EY · KPMG · Protiviti · Guidehouse · Ankura · FTI Consulting · Kroll · Alvarez & Marsal

Named for information only. No firm sponsors or endorses this club.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Do I need experience in consulting?

No. We start from the basics, and most members will be new to this work.

I'm interested in strategy consulting. Should I still come?

Yes. Risk interviews use the same case and teamwork skills, so you can prepare for both at once.

How much time does it take?

Come to whatever interests you. Most events run about an hour.

Is this an official Cornell organization?

Not yet. We're student-run, in our founding semester, and plan to register with Cornell's Campus Activities office.
